So after getting a rebuilt starter, my 1990 Gen1 3.0L would start intermittently. See prior thread titled "Twitchy Ignition, not the Starter" but short story after cleaning the inhibitor switch and replacing a spade fitting, I think it's a defective starter (just replaced at a reputable shop). Does anybody have any opinions on what is a good replacement starter and what isn't? I REALLY need this truck to be dependable as I often offroad in Utah alone as a geologist. Dumb I know, but I spend way more time looking at rocks than I do 4wheeling over them.

your best bet is to take your starter into a shop that specializes in starter and Alternators. having a specialists hands working on it is far better than just buying a remanufactured unit, they are just slapped together fast!

I went through 3 remanufactured starters in 1 year with my old D-50. found another OEM starter at the wreckers, got it rebuilt by a professional and it lasted another 4 years until I sold the truck without skipping a beat.

Most starters come with a warranty of 90 days to 1 yr. Bring it back to the shop and have them get you a new starter. You may have to pay the labor though. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

FWIW, it takes 30 minutes max to replace the starter. If this one does have a warranty you may want to consider the cost to replace it or perhaps just have it rebuilt and replace it yourself.

get it at advance auto its a lifetime i submerged mine in mud screwed it up really good and they replaced it and all i had to give them was my phone number.

i bought mine through napa, think it has a 5yr warrenty and so far its been fine. Had it a couple mounths
