My 95 SR is pushing 200k and just snapped the crank pully bolt, which is patched up but the crank is probably shot. Since they only built the DOHC for a few years they are hard to find. I was wondering if the newer 3.5 would bolt in or is it completely different?

Wiring Harness, ECU and probably a few other things will have to be swapped. Best to buy a totaled doner vehicle with a good engine & possibly tranny to swap.

I believe the cranks are the same between the SOHC and DOHC... I would just rebuild your DOHC with a new crank at most. If you replace the timing belt on time your fine with the current setup.

Thanks for all the input, my local engine rebuilder wants $3000 to rebuild my motor without replacing the crank. I just passed up a 88k motor on ebay for @1400, now the only one there is like $2500. I'm finding SOHC for around $500. I love my Montero but I can't see putting thousands into a 15 year old truck with 200k. Theres one at the Pick n Pull with 160k that has an abondoned vehicle sticker on the windshield with the complete motor I'm tempted to grab but thats a gamble. As long as my crank pully bolt holds my motor runs great, I was just wondering if the SOHC was a bolt in.

Can you pull the block and reinstall yourself? You'd save tons on the $3k that way.

The $3000 was with me pulling the motor.

That sounds pretty high to me. I'd wait and see what others who have done it say about a reasonable cost. Maybe you need to take it to someone else...?
