Drive at 2500 RPM in each gear and tell us what the MPH is.
Ricardo, What's the answer to this question? You gave us detailed facts about the other gears but not 5th where you're having a problem!!! Ok 1st gear reach 13 mph at 2500 rpm 2nd starts at 2000 rpm and reach 20 mph at 2500 rpm 3rd gear starts at 2000 rpm and reach approximately 31 - 32 mph at 2500 rpm 4th gear starts at 2000 rpm and reach 40 mph at 2500 rpm 5th gear starts at 2500 rpm and reach 53 mph at 3500 rpm Not a single rpm change when shifting from 4th to 5th, it is ok to be at such high rpm at 55 mph? The motor is squealing at that point!.

Ricardo, What speed is it when in 5th gear at 2500 RPM? If it is at a speed faster than 4th gear at 2500 rpm then we know that the transmission gears are working ok.

I've never driven my 87 MT in low range, except on trails and therefor slow speeds. And in my case now, I have the 2.85s, so can't really comp that.
I can say this, that both my MTs, in 4Hi, on the highway at ~70 will put them just a little over 3000 RPMs.
I'd say the next test is to put the t-case shifer into 4Lo and repeat the MPH/RPM runs as before. I'll bet they give the same results.

The funny thing is that the previous owner(s) did not notice it. A friend of mine got a brand new Hyunday Accent and the first day he got the car he came and ask me to drive his car. He did not say anything, just ask me to drive it. The weirdest thing happened when I shifted to 5th gear, it actually went slower and higher RPM. 4th and 5Th gears were swapped. We went back to the dealer and he got another car. So, in your case, yes, you got same gear for both 4th and 5th. I guess at this point it will be cheaper to look for a used transmission.

I call bullcrap on this. 4th gear in almost every transmission on earth is direct drive. Straight through with no gears doing anything except free wheeling. As in the output shaft is locked to the input shaft, and the tail shaft is turning at the same speed as the input shaft. It's not like you can accidentally put a gear in the wrong place either.

Off roader: The speed of the 5th gear at 2500 rpm is 40 mph, note as i said in my previous post that the 4th gear reach 40 mph at 2500 rpm Is easy to tell that 5th is useless with that output. What can i do? .

Ricardo,
Just reread my reply to you & realized it may have sounded a bit 'short'. Sorry about that, it was not intentional.
I asked because you said 40-45 earlier but in the follow on post you said "Maybe i'm wrong with the precise speed i told you, but i know it is very low speed." so I wanted to doublecheck.
This is quite strange then.
Only thing I can imagine is somehow, somebody's modified your gear ratio assuming all other things are fine.
Any other idea's guys/gals?

Can anyone with a 2.6 manual duplicate the 2500 rpm speed test and report back your results?

web page The five speed ratios are supposed to be: 3.967 2.136 1.36 1 0.856 I ran the numbers though the convenient calculator (see link), and other than fifth, nothing stands out. Forth seemed a bit off (40 measured vs 46 calculated) but that's probably within the accuracy of the tach and the speedo. At the point me recommendation would be to pull the pan and verify that the shifter rods are moving as each gear is selected and what gear is being engaged OD on that tranny is an external setup. Your numbers support what you think is happening, the question is how? There was a four speed version of this tranny but that does not explain how you have a fifth gear position on your shifter that is the same as fourth. 3200 RPM on fourth should get you to 60 MPH and 71 MPH in fifth (assuming 29" tires).
