Need a Spot
Hello all. I recently got a 1998 Montero with 140K, California model. I got it almost by accident on e-bay. I wasn't really thinking, hardly read the post, placed a low bid sure that I would be out bidded... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />...and, well I am a straight shooter, so I got the Monty.
It needs some TLC, but mechanically it seems to be in good shape. It made the 700 miles trip home with no issues, no vibrations or any warning lights. According to the seller the time belt was replaced at 96K, so I will wait until the spring to replace it. The only thing that doesn't work is the radio, is asking for a code and the dealer says they need the serial number in the back on the radio <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" /> Anything else I should be aware off? I am handy with tools (I also own a Land Rover Discovery <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />)
Oh, and I am in Central IL (Peoria) anybody else around here? I have not seen a Montero in this city.

You can easily access the stereo buy removing the screws on the top of the bezel (look from below). If the dealer will give you the code for free, kudo's to them. Take it and apply it.

IF they want to try and charge you, say no thanks and instead call 1-888-MITSU2005 and request the password and instructions to apply them.

Free of charge, and you'll be set. I believe there are a few folks out there but I suspect the 'Mitsubishi' Montero didn't do so well being in the 'heartland' so to speak and being so close to both GM and Ford's HQ.

HTH.

If you got the the owners manual package, there should be a small credit size card with the code on it and instructions on how to enter the code. Let me know if you don't have the information and I'll post on how to enter the code.

If you have to pull the radio, don't fear the dash. The radio will come out the front once you take the big center column's bezel off.

Thanks for the advise guys, got music now. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
I am now wondering about the time belt. I got all the parts and the tools all I need now is to get in the mood to do the job. It's one of those, "why bother if the car is running just fine?" but I got to get it done. Maybe this Saturday. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I may be preaching to the choir here, but if you're doing the timing belt make sure you've got a new water pump, belt tensioner, belts, hoses, coolant, thermostat, spark plugs, etc. , etc. so you can slay all your underhood maintenance issues at one time. I'm not sure if the crankshaft bolt issue applies to Monteros as late as yours but that would be something else to check on while you're in there.

Thanks Ryany.
As a matter of fact I had not thought about the water pump. I got everything else. I am going to look for the pump now. Thanks for the advise. What is the issue with the crank shaft bolt? What am I supposed to avoid or pay special attention?
Thanks again.

Most of the Mitsu V6's had an issue with the crankshaft bolt - I'm not sure if it was actually a recall or just a service bulletin, but there's an updated crankshaft pulley bolt that should be replaced on most of the 3.0s and early 3.5's, along with a higher torque value for the bolt. Your Monty is late enough that it might not have the bolt issue but now is the right time to check on it. I'm not even sure where to start looking for info on that but hopefully someone with more knowledge of the subject can chime in and enlighten both of us.

If you're brave you might try using the search function and see what you can find - there's a good chance that the subject has been covered previously.

"Oh, and I am in Central IL (Peoria) anybody else around here? I have not seen a Montero in this city."

And you probably won't see too many...ever. Even though Mitsubishi established the 'Diamond-Star' plant in Normal, Il, just 45 minutes away, they, uh, didn't "play in Peoria," to steal a phrase.

I'm from Peoria, IL. as Leadfoot knows (we've exchanged a few PM's). It's the world HQ for Caterpillar Tractor and has an entrenched union feel to it. There are a lot of American vehicles, especially trucks and SUV's, running around that town. What a great place to grow up. And then move on from, for me, at least.

Keep posting up, Mr. Lead. It's nice to hear about the ol' homestead. It's also nice to be able to drive on smooth roads here in AZ, by the way...
