Need a Spot
First time poster, been keeping my mouth shut and doin' as much learn'in as I can from you guys. The wealth of info and the way you guys share your knowledge so freely is great.
I'm a long time Monty owner having owned 4 over the past 15yrs, all '90s/'91s. I've always wanted a SWB and have finally found the right one...I think. That's why I'm posting. I love the trucks but have little to no mechanical knowledge when it comes to cars/trucks. I do none of my own repairs and froth at the mouth looking at the amazing stuff you guys do to your vehicles. Give me a camera, any camera and I can tear it apart with my eyes closed and put it back together better than new but vehicles, no way.
Anyway, I've found a candidate for purchase here in Portland OR and I'm hoping there's a member on the forum from my neck of the woods who would offer his advice and eyeballs on the truck before I make the purchase. I'm aware of the usual trouble spots having dealt with them on my previous Montys but this is an '87 which is a different beast from the 90/91s so I'm not sure where to put the scrutiny.

This is a great forum and again, thanks for the knowledge you guys offer up to those of us who are much less mechanically inclined.

Any local Monty heads please contact me.

Thanks
KRhea

I'm in Boise which is close but too far to help check out the 2 door you are looking at. Be extra careful about the mechanical condition of any of the 4 cyl. they are prone to overheating and cracked heads. Side note, I may have a cherry 89 V6 2-door available which has rear coils, EFI and other upgrades. PM me if you are serious about a solid truck.

If you can take apart a camera, you know you should be able to deal with a Monty.

What you should do is face your demons, cross into the abyss, and shmooz Kecin C to meet you with his Turbo SWB. Get a ride in a spooled Monty and it's hard to see wanting anything less. He is in Portland and knows as more about the 2.6 than most, or motors in general for that matter.

While it may seem that Gen1 SWB montys are rare as hens teeth, I've discovered a bunch using a site mash for craiglist. Gives you all the SWB's for sale on CL anywhere in the USA, Canada and the UK for that matter. See URL below, be sure to look for 87-90 Dodge Raiders, the exact same vehicle as a montero, just rebadged to sell in the US.

There was a great looking rig for sale in Seattle last week, super clean, one owner, 2200. and only 57K miles!
Been sold since, but you might want to keep an eye out.

Best of luck, I love my 90 Gen1 SWB

That is a great site mash, thanks! Not sure how I missed the one in Seattle as I'm sniffin' up that way about everyday on CL. Perhaps it was listed somewhere else.

Thanks

Not prone to overheating, just to cracked heads, then overheating.

That said a good 2.6 will last a long time. However the V6 model have a lot more desirable features. The 4 cyl are great for turbo swaps.
