I've been working on a 1988 Raider. The starter gave up. I thought I'd replace it with a standard Monty 2.6 liter starter.

Here are web images of a typical Monty starter --

But this starter is different!

The starter is much larger than the OEM components.
It appears to have a gear drive that the standard starter lacks.
While the standard Monty starter has a partial cover over the starter driveshaft, this one fits directly into the engine and lacks the hemispherical cover.

This IS the starter from this engine. The engine originally came from a donor car, a 1987 Montero. I had the donor engine rebuilt at a local machine shop.

Has anyone ever seen this starter?

What's it doing on this engine?

If someone knows this starter, that would help me find a replacement.

Any help appreciated!

Never seen one like it, but why replace it. Just take it to a starter shop and get it rebuilt. Gear reduction starters are nice...

That looks like the starter from a Starion. If I remember right the Montero starter is also a gear reduction but it uses a planetary sear set

I have the same starter in my 2.6 Raider.

Intercooled Starion.

I would use one of them long before a direct drive Montero starter.

I didn't see any difference between the 89 Quest starter and my mitsu starter that I did my swap with... Both were mitsubishi OEM ones by the look of it... were there specific years they had gear reduction?

You'd think cold weather areas would be the application for gear reduction starters. I remember starting my 2.6 up 10 below zero and man that starter sounded kind of pissy. Only took a few cranks though with my trusty mikuni <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Not sure how long it was done for but the gear redution starter they came on 2wd trucks that were auto trans on rwd cars Auto trans..It may have been gone by the time Mitsu put a 4x4 in this country ..?? Thats why it is not none around here ..Came on Dodge's....??????...I think....?

That is the best Mitsu starter ...

Every starter will interchange with any Mitsu .......Right.....??

I've interchanged the five defferent starters "I" know of in my travils from the mid 70's cars up to mid 90's Mitsu stuff .. From fwd to rwd to awd to truck to starion ... From old 1.6 to v6 ..And I'm sure I have not tryed all combs .. And not up passed late 90 ...And not a lot of the v6 stuff..To me it looks if every style stater may interchange with ever car or truck and drive train and or other wise

But

The real fat non-gear redution in a v6 ...Do to the body of the starter hitting the block strut ..It would work and bolt up if it did not hit ...

I never buy a new starter ... I hit the first Mitsu I see In the junk yard get the starter and it always fits ...?? I think they did it then could see that there non- gear redution was fine and dropped making it ...

This a great big rumor Haztoys has been digging around on for years ...

Look under the early Dodge (NOT Mitsu) auto trans 2wd D-50 truck it maybe there in the parts books is ware you will find it ..????????..I think I have two in the starter stash... They cost so much years ago when I looked never tryed to buy another one sents..????

Those pictures of the straight looking starter are the 1.2 KW gear reduction starter motor. There is no offset in the case because it has an inline planetary gear set.

The offset housing gear reduction starter did come on some Monteros, and the Starion.

I have seen a direct drive starter listed in the 84 Montero Service manuals. It's a really wussy starter.

The V6 starter is a planetary gear reduction type.

Bottom line is on first glance the direct drive and the gear reduction starters look the same. The direct drive seems to be limited to 1984 or so. I know it was gone in 86. Those photos from the web appear to be the 1.2 KW gear reduction starters. The 2.6 inline starter is a pretty good unit and it has the same power rating as the V6 starter motor ( according to the 89 manual).

Getting the starter rebuilt sounds like the right thing to do.

Neither of the regular starters from 1987-1988 Monteros will interchange.

So I'll take this to the alternator/starter shop next time I'm out that way.

If my time means anything, I'm better off rebuilding this starter than looking for a replacement.

Thanks for your help.
