Last September I took Betsy 4 out for a day of playing with the Nissan Club. She did great! I managed to handle everything the big boys did without needing a tug. I then did a quad trail that no one was willing to do (and no one had ever seen done). Betsy came out with some minor damage, mainly a dent in the door (I used the door to turn on the quad trail). I also learned the limits of off camber, I managed to get her tipping, but I turned down the hill just in time.

When I got home I noticed a bit of oil on the pavement. When I say a bit I mean a slick the Exxon Valdez would be proud of. It turns out that at some point in the day (probably the last 15 minutes of trail) I managed to rattle the oil cap off. The oil cap was sitting on the intake.

I changed the oil the next day, no water came out. I drove the truck for a couple of days after this incident but she started to smoke... allot... on her last day I drove 200 km and added 3 liters of oil.

Needless to say I was a little mad at Betsy so I let her sit for a few months until I wasn't angry anymore...

I don't have the space or resources to do a leak down test, and I'm not keen on pulling the head off in my condo parking space.

I pulled the turbo and found that it was pretty much shot. The shop that re-built it said that the insides were scored which usually means oil contamination (I'm not surprised).
I was hoping the damage was limited to the turbo but when I took her out with the new turbo she smoked as much as before.

Is my turbo hooped again? Probably. I'm thinking that water and dust go into my engine and I need either rings or valve guides. I'm concnerned that whatever contamination is in there has destroyed my now new turbo. It seems to smoke most under power, but keeps smoking after I lift off the throttle (probably burning residual oil).

I guess I'm going to take her to a mechanic and get a quote, see what is wrong anyway. I don't have the time or space to do it myself (or the skill). If I need a major rebuild I will probably be selling her. If anyone needs a project or a parts truck let me know.

I've also found a guy with a fleet of Gen I Raiders. He's interested in a trade but I don't really want a project truck at this point... Betsy has broken my spirit.

Wish me luck at the mechanics...

Maurie

Body Damage is Cool
your rebuilt turbo is fine...thank your oil filter for that!! any damage that was done before has left its mark and rebuilding the turbo was clearly a false diagnosis even though the shop that rebuilt it said it was shot. It's obvious that rebuilding it didn't remotely fix the problem so there is more to the oil burning than the turbo. a leak down test only involves the actual leak down tester and an air compressor, either of which you could *Deleted* in your parking space for an hour or 2. I still can't see the cylinders/rings being shot since it purrs like a kitten still. But you said it best, let a professional take one final look at the truck and see what his conclusion before you make any final decision on what to do with the truck.

Mudrunner
Guys might shoot me for saying this but try running a can of seafoam in the fuel and dump one into the oil pan, run the oil about 5 mins and change and run the stuff in the gas all the way through and hope for the best. I use that stuff regularly and it keeps my truck pretty much smoke free. Also after a day of wheeling how was the air filter??? these things seem to hate being dirty. 20 bucks may save you several hundred and the sea foam isn't going to hurt anything.
