Looks like someone on Outer Limits has run across some Chinese-made 5.29 gearsets for $30 from a distributor (not a typo...$30). I'll keep my Mitsu 5.29 gears, but thought maybe some of you gear-heads might be willing to take a chance on some cheap gears. At that price, you could buy several.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Seems the russians also noticed this and got a reply from crown wheel and pinion confirming the $30 price.

Although the webpage posted on outerlimits does not work so can't buy em yet.

On a side note, you can apparently buy the 5.29 gear sets in Russia

For $60 per truck, I think it's at least worth a chance. At least you'd get the opportunity to practice your axle set-up procedures.

Body Damage is Cool
5.29s for sale in Russia are standard 9" rear and small 7.25" front (won't fit ARB). Those are readily available from multiple sources.
It's that elusive MB241981 (8" 5.29) that everyone is chasing after. At $30 I can't phantom how it can be done. Price for experiment is cheap but if it looses it's teeth somewhere on Rubicon cost of recovery might quite offset it.

That's why one might buy three or four sets and then get proficient at setting up gears. Maybe even just set up a spare third member to carry. Might get good enough to do it on the trail. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

so, this would work for the small '88 gen1 front end (7.25in)? for the rear, I'm running the sport rear. it had leaf springs, so i think that makes it the 3.0L model with the 9in, right? If these are low quality, would normal road use also tear these up or just more harder offroad driving?
