I just wanted to share this info. After searching the autoparts stores for a replacement compass light bulb and having no luck. I tried Radio Shack. They have a 12v bulb part # 272-1154. You have to remove the old one from the holder by removing the small brass contacts then just bend the wires around the holder and push the contacts back in. Works great.

And I would ask, does this light still adjust with the dash lights like the OEM one does? It's great to have the bright output during the day and be able to see my compass and thermometer again, but I would hate to have it that bright in the dark if it did not dim down to match the other instrument lights...

And may I ask why this is even necessary to scrounge this bulb and go to the extra effort? The O.E. bulb from the dealer is less than $2. I put the part number in the specialized part number repository, along with a brief how-to explanation to remove and replace it.

The part number I had worked in my '95 SR. I can only assume it's the same for all Gen 2's.

Yep, that would be the one! Anyone trusting the dealer to give them the right compass bulb needs to be careful though. One of their parts programs will give MR283314 as a number for the bulb. This bulb will look perfect (though the rubber cap's color is just slightly bluer) but it will prove to be 1/8th" too small to fit. I imagine this bulb must work on some compass assembly as their diagram in the computer showed it put into the same place, and this was the part that matched my 95SR's VIN.

With the ASA program, I give the dealer the part number. He's just my middleman, my 'willing thrall' in Star Trek terms. Sorry. It just came to mind that way.
