so i was looking into a rear locker for my trooper, the only one available was designed for the front 10 bolt, which has some minor differences. my questions unfold...is anyone running a locker in their rear 10 bolt? any issues? i am tempted to upgrade to the 12 bolt, disc brakes! and more locker options...but would that mean i need to change the gears in my front 8 bolt, since the new rear would likely be 4.55's not the 4.10's im pretty sure came with the turbo diesel rear 10 bolt? and did any of the second gen troopers come factory with a locker? searching online, some of the used car part places list the 88' options as locking, or non-locking, adding further mystery. hmmm, so should i stick with the 10 bolt, get the aussie locker and be done? or upgrade for better brakes, durability, and more gear/locker options?

Check with a guy named Ditchdoc on Planetisuzoo.com. He has an '86 gasoline (4zd1, 2.3 carbureted) Trooper that he put an Isuzu 12-bolt rear axle in.
I dont think any Troopers came with locking rear differential. Some came with Limited Slip Differentials (LSD) but I believe only on 2nd Gens (1992 and later). The data code for LSD is G80. You will find that on the VIN and the data plate inside the engine bay.
For 4.10:1 axles, look for a data code of GT5. GT4 is 3.73, found in some 90's model Rodeos. IIRC, all Troopers came with 4.56 as in the first Gens, though '89 RS models had 4.77:1, and many/most 1992+ have 4.30:1 gear ratios.
Axle width (wheel mounting surface=WMS) increased in model years, so early Troopers were something like 58", and later models were up to 60" or 61". You'd better research this factor more thoroughly, though, as I've only read it on Planet. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Pretty much right on except that there were 12-bolt, leaf spring axles with LSD. That said, the chances of the clutches being any good at this date is pretty slim. My rig came with the G80 LSD, but by 150,000 or so it was completely gone.

that is a good call, i wonder if the replacement clutch is still available, what it costs and if it would be the same type of job as to install a true locker.

The last time I checked, the clutches were more than buying a lunchbox type locker (Aussie locker or lockrite).

yeah, ill probably go with the aussie then, when it happens. i had to have a leaky injector pump worked on, and that set me back quite a bit. i missed my opportunity to buy the 10 bolt locker from someone, so i have to wait a bit longer-which means i get longer to figure out if i want to stay with the 10 bolt, or upgrade to the 12 bolt. i think it would be nice, simply for the better braking capacity, that is one of the things i really like about the 89. it brakes so much better, and i just put new wheel cylinders and drum brakes on the 86, it just cannot compare to rear discs.

is the later first gen axles the same WMS to WMS as the earlier ones? i am looking to get some wheel spacers for the front so my tires dont rub, but did not want to buy two sets if when i put a newer axle in the rear, it would be wider already. i have a set of 33's i cant wait to put on for the summer fun, but i am waiting to get my front end parts in the mail so my alignment wont wear them out prematurely.

i had to have a leaky injector pump worked on, and that set me back quite a bit. Did you pull the pump yourself? If so, were there any difficulties regarding setting the timing or anything requiring specialized tools? I need to have this done as well, and am trying to get an idea as to what's involved.

no i didnt end up doing it myself- although i should have. i took it into the only shop here who would look at it and it was a damn fiasco(long story), but it finally got done. all that needed sealing was the top cover, then the side plugs started leaking too. but the gasket kit is available here in the states and was around $30. the pump didnt have to come off, it was serviceable on the vehicle. i can post the kit part number if you want, its out in the garage. where is your pump leaking?
oh and i picked up the 12 bolt from the JY today, 161.63 out and about. no calipers, good thing i have the axle from the 94. anyone need it? after i take off the calipers anyways... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

Hey will you post that seal kit part number? Perhaps best to post in new thread. Thanks Mike
