My 88 4Runner has the basic instrument cluster, I was thinking of getting an SR5 cluster and swapping it in. Is there anything I should know before buying one? Does it need to be from a 4 cylinder? (what I have) or will one from a 6 cylinder work ok? What years are compatible? I would assume 87-89. Any advice is appreciated.

Body Damage is Cool
Anything from 85-88 in the truck and 85-89 in the 4Runners should work. You need to match engines (4cyl vs. V6), and manual vs. auto, but otherwise it's pretty much plug and play.

You also need an oil pressure sensor from an SR5 truck.

As mentioned, teh key is matching motors and transmissions, the pinning is different for a/t vs manual (learned teh hard way).
Technically 4 vs 6 cyl works, but the RPM readings will be off by 50%.

Need a Spot
As mentioned, you are going to want to match size of your motor to the doners motor.

Although, I have had the SR5 cluster in mine now and it came out of an automatic. Pluged right up. Of corse my fuel guage doesnt work but it didnt work with the original cluster. I believe its just my sending unit, which from what I hear, needs to be replaced with a SR5 sending unit in order to have the low fuel light...

BTW, I have a '87 4cyl 4x4 5sp and used an '85 4cyl 2wd Auto
