This is a follow-up to my previous post.

My mechanic was able to swap a used SOHC 6G72 from Japan (maybe from a 4 door sedan). He said the engine runs good, but know the automatic transmission is making a grinding noise and he is unable to shift it into gear. He said he has an extra rebuilt tranny from a 94 in his garage that he will try to swap with the broken tranny.

The previous engine through a rod, but I don't see any connection this would have with the tranny. What could cause a tranny to "breakdown" after "blowing up" an engine?

Thanks,
Ron

Tell him to seat the torque converter right this time. He most likely only seated it down part way smashing the TC onto the trans when bolting the engine to the bellhousing. Brendan ruined his by not seating it all the way and it did the same exact thing grinding and not going into gear when he replaced the trans on my current Montero. He might chime in here and explain more.

Yep, have him go ahead and buy you another trans. Because he very likely busted the pump gears by forcing it without being lined up. That sucks.

Yup, that's what he did. And you need a new torque converter, too, probably. Blowing the engine would have zero effect on the tranny. Tell the doofus there are 3 sock-ins on the tranny, and to measure the stinkin' extension of the flexplate past the block bellhousing surface and make sure it matches the installed depth of the torque converter this time. He might get away with just an oil pump on the tranny, IF he finds all the pieces of the pump. And he probably won't.

Be prepared to talk lawyer at him...

Hope he ain't a friend now. Cause, if he was, he probably won't be soon...

So the tranny and TC are toast? I hope not, cause I had a hard time trying to find the engine. Now transmissions issues Could it still be rebuildable?

Yeah the mechanic was recommended to me by the previous owner of the my Montero.

If I do need a new tranny, can anyone recommend a shop or parts store near the San Gabriel, CA area.

Thanks for your help guys.

It's not your problem, it's his problem. The transfer case is most likely ok. No reason for it to have been hurt at all. I'd let him install the 94 tranny, for free, and give you a 2 year warranty on it. He can get yours rebuilt, and get some of his money back out of it.

He's going to swap the 93 tranny with 94 from a DOHC. The bellhousing will need to be swapped also. Are there any compatibility issues swapping a 94 tranny into a 93?

Yes, not to say it wont work but its a bit bigger trans that may not fit without a body lift. Mitsu lifted the body about an ich or so to fit this trans in the 94 and up DOHC's.

You'll also have to figure out the electrical circuit. The hold/normal/power modes.
