I submitted a "forgot password" request and did not receive it via email as expected. Since I operate my own mail server, I checked the logs to see what went wrong. My server is configured to reject connections from servers that do not have a valid DNS address. The standard SMTP transaction includes a "greeting" in which the "sending" mail server identifies itself (hostname). Your actual SMTP host is "218552-app1.s88154.4x4wire.com", but it is announcing itself as "218552-app1.s88154.4x4wire" ([color:"red"]without the ".com"[/color]). Since there is no DNS entry for that, my server drops the connection (as it should). Other users' email providers may accept the mail, but it may be sent to the "junk" or "spam" folder. I noticed that there were some complaints of mail going to "junk" in the past.

Obviously (since I'm here), I found my password. But I did not, and will not ever get emails from your server unless this is fixed. I suspect others may have the same issue. If you fix this misconfiguration, you will help lots of us. Let me know if you need assistance with it. It's a simple fix in sendmail.

Thanks.
Jack

Yes, it should be a "simple" fix in sendmail....

However, when you are in "cloud computing" things are not that simple.

Your issue is noted and I have discussed email errors with the ISP in the past with no definitive resolution as I cannot correlate complaints with specific log entries from the server side.

That specific point does need to be resolved and now that I have a definitive error message from a user log, I may be able to get it corrected through the ISP.

Keep in mind, when I look at email error logs, I am looking at more than a thousand entries per day. My sampling has noted they correlate to know spam sites which means I do not worry about them.

Thanks for your log entry.

I summarized the log entries in my post, but if you need the complete entries I will be happy to send them.

Meanwhile, I'm changing my account's email address to Gmail, in hopes that I can get mail from the forum. I could easily turn off "domain name checking" on my mail server, but 1) there's no reason a sender's domain should not have a valid DNS entry, and 2) it's stopped a TON of incoming spam at the connection level rather than via filtering. The only "false positives" occur when a sender's server is misconfigured.
