My father-in-law has a 86 truck 4x4. 22RE/Carb Last week he was on a short trip and blew the trans I think. Cannot hold it into gear. It pushes out no matter how hard I try to hold it in. Only 2nd and 4th gears work... Think it is re build-able??
TIA

Sounds like the bushing at the bottom of the shifter is bad. $10 from Marlin, and probably 30 min to replace. Part can be found here Todd

It is rebuildable, if you have the skills you can get a Rebuild-kit for about $340, buy a New-Rebuilt one for about $1100 plus shipping(for rebuilt transmission and your core), pay a shop $1500+ to rebuild yours, or look for a used one in good condition on Craigslist, wrecking yard, etc., should be able to pick one up for under $250. If you go the used route, try to find one from an '89-95 Truck/4-Runner, or from a turbo, they tend to hold up better to high mileage than the earlier transmissions.
More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else. '90 X-cab 4.88's 33 BFG AT's, rr ARB, Headers, Ignition upgrade, cold air induction. '91 X-cab 5.29's 315's BFG MT's, rr ARB, custom bumper and flatbed

Since were on the subject, why would some 4X4's of the same year have "G" series, and others "W"? Not sure but I think the G's came with the 22R engines and the W's with the 22REs, according to the FAQ page: - http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/

Thanks Roger.
I was confused with "22RE/Carb" in the original description. I'm assuming "22R/Carb" (unless it has an RE sticker on the valve cover?)
