So my starter had been acting up lately (dashlights on, battery charged, but just a slight click noise rather then firiing up)
I went ahead and took the solenoid off and pulled the shaft portion out. Got everything cleaned out inside (plenty of crap in there!) and regreased the top and bottom bearings.
Now the problem is, how do I get the shaft back in the solenoid housing?!?!
I cannot figure out how to get the four spring loaded copper contact at the bottom of the housings to retract enough in order to fully reinsert the shaft back in. (damn there are some big innuendos lurking in this post!)
Can anyone offer any advise? PLEASE!
Any sick and twisted innuendos will be tolerated...
Thanks
Travis

I know that Sean (strawmyers) has rebuilt his starter and he used to have pictures for us, but I cannot find them.
There should be some way to hold the brushes/contacts back as you install the plate they are attached to. There should be somewhere to insert a piece of wire to keep them retracted until it is all back together. If not, get creative.
Good Luck Michael

No pictures in that old thread, Michael; so you weren't missing anything. I just used a small (shirt pocket sized) flat head screwdriver, maybe two. Took multiple tries and a lot of patience; but if you get one seated and hold things just right so that it stays put while you work your way around, you'll get it. Good luck <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
