Need a Spot
hey guys i just got a new ride but it has some issues
let me give you some background wifes friend has 99 grand Cherokee Laredo had hole in radiator she put bunch of stop leak in didn't work so had rad and hoses replaced at shop. then needed brakes so i did those, then heater would not work so i flushed heater core solved problem, then starts running really rough motor vibrating and has loud ticking noise in engine compartment, she takes to shop and 350 bucks later the rearend has new seals, then overheats so i replace thermostat and notice ticking sound, motor gets to temp and stays so i send it on its way, 2 days later dies on side of road she waits about five minutes pushes pedal to floor and it cranks and starts up drives it to my house and tells me to keep the P.O.S. So now do i part it out or try and fix it? I think its a head gasket witch means pulling the motor and probably a rebuild. I'm not a rich guy so is putting my hard earned cash into this beneficial? any ideas?

NOTHING... Not one damn thing you have said says "head gasket"!! Did it puke it's guts out?
Ticks are normal in 10 year old vehicles...if that is all it is, a tick.
Give us some more info about the present condition.

ok so it has been overheated who knows how many times 225,000 miles thermostat is 3 days old has no coolant in it , missing like its running on 3 cylinders, sounds like it has a collapsed lifter, oil is overfull about 2 inches on dip stick and only cranks over if you mash the gas pedal to the floor and cycle the starter about five times but it will start

If that extra 2 inches in the oil pan is coolant you are in trouble! Personally I'd be looking for a replacement engine and wouldn't think about messing with that one.
I'd find the junkyard engine I wanted and get it home before even starting with the swap. Around here junkyard engines come with all attachments already on them. So I'd have extra stuff after the swap.
I am a fan of rebuilding my own engines, but that one sounds like too much junk for me to even start rebuilding it. Might be the block is ruint, not just the head.

Most 99 4.0l WJ jeeps only came with an electrical cooling fan. The fan is controlled by a relay that mounts to the inner fender, under the headlamp, in front of the battery tray. THIS RELAY FAILS CONSTANTLY!!! The fan motor itself also fails regularly! ( Only those 4.0l WJs with factory installed trailer tow package had an additional mechanical fan with a fan clutch on the front of the engine.)

I can almost guarantee yours has failed.

When the electrical fan fails, the engine overheats, AND THE DRIVER KEEPS ON DRIVING AFTER THE WARNING LIGHT AND DINGER SOUNDS OFF the head warps badly and the head gasket blows. Keep driving it further and the block overheats, ruining the pistons and/or rings. Keep cranking it after it dies, the coolant in the cylinder bends the rod/s causing a knock.

You probably need at least a new head, if not a complete overhaul. Only a teardown will tell you where to go from here.

After repairing or replacing the engine, be sure to diagnose and repair the fan relay, and/or fan motor, and add the HD cooling mechanical fan and fan clutch to the engine before you run it again.
