Just got finished pulling the crossmember to do a trans fluid/filter change and found it's REALLY rusty where it contacts the frame rails. At first I thought the flaky rust chunks were remnants of some sort of gasket...(they aren't...right?). The pics don't do it justice but some of the flakes are a good 1/8th inch thick. What, if anything, should I do when I reassemble this? Should I try to reposition what's left of the rust flakes and just sandwich them back in place? Maybe make a loctite and rustflake sandwich?

Move somewhere civilized where snow isn't an issue during the winter. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Seriously I'd consider buying a replacement cross member from car-part.com. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Wire brush the Pi$$ out of it, paint with some rustoleum and reassemble. Keep an eye out for a new crossmember next time your at the yard.

Body Damage is Cool
I'd also use a rust converter on it prior to painting and also clean/paint the frame where the crossmember bolts. Also don't know if you can get a product called "Rust Check" where you are but it is great for stopping/preventing rust. I've used it for years and it creeps into the smallest places to get at the rust.
