last week I noticed that the oil pressure was reading around 20 when it usually holds at around 40. Over the past week, it has been gradually reading lower and lower. Today I drove 200 miles, stopped for gas, restarted the jeep and the gauge stayed hovering at zero with the check gauges light on. Made it the remaining 15 miles home with no problems. Is it the gauge? Can I drive it to work tomorrow? Should I just replace the pump? (97 TJ).

are the lifters ticking? If you still have a quiet engine it's more likely a gauge or sender unit issue. The engine will talk to you if it needs oil. I had the sender go bad on my '99 at about 130K miles, it started reading lower and lower then nothing, no noise, and when I pulled the sender I noticed the plug moved relative to the body of the sending unit. The short of it though is to listen to the lifters.

What Sean said X 2! 99% of the time it is the sendor or the plug on the sendor. If you actually have less than 12 pounds you will hear the engine making all sorts of clicks and clacks.

thanks guys. It was the plug to the sender. Back up to 40 now.
