My ignition key is loose and comes out while the rig is running, (sometimes handy) but I want a new tight cylinder. I've called the dealership and don't want to pay them. I think I found the part on rockauto but looking at mine when installed they snap the heads of the screws off for security. I've read that you cut a groove in there to get a flat blade in to remove them but they're recessed in, can't see that happening. Any ideas/experience?

the guy who owned my rig before me lost the key, so he drilled out bolts. I had a new cylinder put in, but I don't know what they used for bolts. him drilling it out didn't seem to cause any problems.

Either drill them out or drill a hole big enough for one of those special removers when you strip the head of a screw. I forget what they call them. They work well though!

Ive done several of these. Usually I just use a punch, and spin them out. Couple of whacks to get them loose, and they come out by hand.

You can't replace the lock cylinder part itself? Seems like alot of work for what some cars is a 5 minute job.

thanks guys for the help. I don't think I can replace just the cylinder, I can't see how to get it out without doing all of this, but of course I could be wrong

Just wanted to update this for anyone in the future. Landraider was right about getting the assembly off the column, then the real work started trying to get the old cylinder out of the assembly. There are a few spring pins that have to be pulled out, not punched through, I took it to a lock shop with my new cylinder, $20 and now it's all back in.

Just purchased a replacement ignition switch on Sat for the 96 from the local car parts place. Cost was $40 and when I opened the house brand box, it was an OEM mitsubishi switch. LOL.
Now to see if I can take it apart or if I'll have to get it started and drive it to a shop.
