I just noticed my headrests had velcro on the bottom and are removable!
Can I just throw these in the washing machine? Should I soak them in something first? I have my doubts that my washing machine can take out 20+ years of grime . . . .

Do a little test spot with some Oxiclean; I think you can find the small sample/office sized ones at the store. If it looks good, get some regular Oxiclean and mix some in a bucket of hot water to dissolve; let stuff set in it overnight, dump the works in the washer.
That's how I clean up my grubby Carhartts at the end of winter. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/oink.gif" alt="" />

Well, I didn't try Oxiclean, but I did soak them in a solution of laundry detergent and vinegar for about 45 minutes and then threw ithem in for a "heavy soil" cycle in my washer. I was amazed how well they came out! They look new!
