Whats the deal with the crankshaft pully nut removal. I read the tech threads and I see that it's dificult to remove. Do you need to remove it for a timing belt job? I was thinking that it would only be a problem if I was pulling/rebuilding the engine.

You have to take it off the get the lower timing belt cover off to replace the timing belt. It's easy to get off. Just use a half inch breaker bar and rest it on the frame rail and do a light bump on the starter, and it comes loose. Torqing it back down requires some way to hold the pulley/crank still while you honk on the wrench, or cheat and bash the tightening wrench with a dead blow hammer.

I see. That really bites. Dealer maintenance engineering. Like jacking up the engine to get to a few plugs. Or using a special tool that resembles an alien probe to get to a few plugs. Thanks.

Some pulleys have two holes for a "Special Tool" that you insert into the holes to hold it still while tightening the bolt. If you have a welder you can make it with a couple of bolts, a grinder and a piece of angle iron. Others here have made one with a couple of pieces of flat stock bolted together. Or you can use a chain wrench and piece of belt to cushion the chain.
