Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
The check engine light in my 99 xj came on, and I'm trying to get the diagnostic codes. I start with the key in the off position, then turn the key to on-off-on-off-on. The error codes are supposed to show up in the digital odometer, but I get nothing showing. I'm sure I'm doing something stupid and wrong, but what?
Thanks for any input and happy Memorial weekend.

Early OBD-2 Mopars eliminated the three key cycles to get the codes function. In around 2002 or so, it came back, it even will read the exact code in the odometer window.

Early OBD-2 Mopars eliminated the three key cycles to get the codes function. In around 2002 or so, it came back, it even will read the exact code in the odometer window. Crap, I was afraid of that. I checked the odb-codes web site and wasn't able to find any solutions, other than to buy a scanner for a few hundred bucks. Seems weird that they'd discontinue the key-cycles option for a few years then re-enable it, but I guess it is what it is. Seems my only solution is to take it to a shop then... Thanks all for your input! Jon

Auto Zone will read the codes for you. My son had a check engine light and I told him to go to AZ. They read the code, reset it and told him to tighten his gas cap.

Sounds like a good marketing campaign.
Wonder how many Auto Zones will provide that type of service??

Sounds encouraging, I'll check it out. Hopefully it's something as simple as a gas cap (although it's not that - I checked).
Thanks all, jon

The key flip code check never provided a "code" apprearing on the dash, rather it made the check engine light blink. You then count the blinks. 55 is an all clear no hard set codes. it blinks like ----- ----- Not everything that trips a light sets a code. Not always that a code means change that part.
