Getting the Wheeling Fever
I know it's kinda an oxymoron as our prechambers seem to severely hamper performance mods. I own both an auto 4D56 and a new to me 4M40 5speed, I have done quite a bit to my 2.5 including turbo upgrade, front mount IC, 3" exhaust, tweaked pump (timing and pressure) modified intake manifold.... I haven't bothered to dyno it as it is an auto turning 35x12.5s. These made a decent improvement in power causing me to want a 2.8 and a five speed. Now that I have finally aquired one I'm going to start my build and document some of it on here, so in a couple weeks once I get it through all the inspections I'll throw it on the dyno and give a baseline and begin the mods.

If anyone is wondering, I've been beating on my Paj for more than two years now running between 25 and 30psi with no apparent problems, much tougher than the equivelant toyota diesel. Obviously I keep an eye on the EGTs and do the regular maintenance.

My other plans for the Paj are a SAS with coilovers, but I'll probably not start that for a couple months although I have the parts, I just need to fix up my old Paj to sell, need moneys.

Welcome! I assume you're here from the delica forum? Think I recognize the name. I too had a 4D56 but went to the 4m40. Although I did go from the 5sp in the 2.5 to an auto in the 2.8... look forward to seeing what improvements you come up with. Will be interesting to see your baseline too...

Cheers
Phil

OK, you have me very interested!

Could you please make a post on how you did some of your 4D56 mods? What worked, what didn't, photos, etc. I'm about to start into modding my Paj now that I have another vehicle as my DD.

Turbo = upgraded the compressor side to a 15G wheel so the turbo doesn't have to spin so freakin fast to flow as much air, also to limit cavitation at higher boost levels.

FMIC = I don't like top mounts especially wheeling, you get so much heat soak its crazy. I was lazy with my install as I needed to put the front mount in before a trip and didn't have time to relocate all the coolers up high, so I mounted it a little too low in my opinion. I haven't destroyed it wheeling yet, although it does have a few dents.

Exhaust = Built a full 3" stainless exhaust for it, I think the next one will be a side exit for space constraint reasons.

Pump = I advanced the timing a little so as to increase power but not enough to reduce bottom end. I adjusted the on boost fueling and turned the overall pressure up as well.

Intake Manifold = I didn't like how small the inlet to the manifold was so I cut it out and welded a 2.5" stub on there. I also sealed off the overboost valve.

I found all the mods to make a marked improvement just be sure to have a pyro and keep an eye on things.

Just installed a boost gauge and a pyro along with my meth injection and I made some EGR block off plates. I'm going to see if I can book a run on the dyno to lay down some stock numbers as well as some with meth sprayin and some increased boost. It seems my wastegate actuator is set for just over ten pounds boost, my 2.5 was 12PSI when stock, anyone else with a 4M40 and a boost gauge to compare stock boost with?? It also gets to 1300*F rather quickly. I'll do a run with the meth tomorrow and see what kind of a difference it makes, didnt quite finish the wiring tonight so testing will wait untill tomorrow. So far I'm quite impressed with the stock power when compared to my modded 2.5, I can't wait to really step it up.

Yup, mine was 10psi as well. I shimmed the wastegate with washers last summer and was going to 12, but it's now only going to 10 again...

RE egt's: mine can get quite high too, on a climb, or when towing. I really want to change out the oe exhaust for a 2.5" setup...

I have noticed that winding the engine out at 3500 rpms in a lower gear is the best way to keep the egt's down. When climbing steep grades I just ride in 3rd gear at 50 mph and pyro sits at 900F.

So I'll be running it tomorrow evening, stock, stock with meth, upped boost, upped boost with meth, fuel and boost turned up and that with meth. I haven't decided how much boost to run without exhaust or a bigger cooler. Then I'll get around to upgrading the turbo, building a 3" exhaust and a front mount intercooler and dyno it again with that done and I'll set my pump timing on the dyno to see how that affects my graphs. We'll see how long it takes me to build everything being a cash poor student, lol.

Spencevans: Yes, the higher your rpms the more air you are flowing = coller EGTs, although your water temps may rise faster. Upping your boost will also cool your EGTs.

only to a point...when your your turbo/intercooler are too small your turbo is pushing hot air into the engine which won't help EGTs at all.
