3.5L 24v - Need to remove intake to replace lash adjusters? #999241 06/05/10 07:46 PM

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Today I had planned to replace all 24 lash adjusters. Many of them are noisy below 3000 RPM and no amount of oil changes, high detergent or not, has improved them. Napa had the upgraded adjusters available with the 3mm oil hole. Paid about $250 for all 24. Gulp!

It appears as though I need to remove the upper and lower intake plenum to remove the valve covers so that I can replace the lash adjusters.

Now I am wondering if I should bite the bullet and replace my JB-welded lower plenum with a new Mits part. I am not going to get rid of this rig anytme soon, so it is attractive to me to restore the original functionality of the intake plenum butterflys.

Do I need to remove the intake to remove the valve covers, or have any of you squeezed them out with taking everything apart?

Thanks!

Body Damage is Cool
you just need to remove the upper intake manifold i have a plugged center section (no butterflys) and i rent the tool to compress the springs you will also have to remove the camshafts so might as well replace the cam seals while you are doing the job make sure that you plug all the oil passages with rags so you dont drop a keeper down into the engine

it dosent have to be surrounded by water to be an island

I have had some luck replacing the lifters with the cams in place. Just need to have the cam lobe "up", compress the valve, pop the rocker arm off. Swap the lifter and reverse. It's "just that easy".

Except for the stubborn ones.

Thanks guys. I imagine I'll need to rent the valve spring compressor tool to do this?
