Getting the Wheeling Fever
Howdy, guys.

I just wanted to introduce myself. I just bought a 1991 3.0L Montero. I am already addicted to making this truck awesome and keeping it on the road. Its not quite in trail shape yet. It needs shocks, pitman arm,(on both sides). Most of all, it needs to pass emissions. So far, I have done the basics. Replaced the belts, spark plugs, wheel bearings and cleaned the IACV. I should see you on the trail soon.

Bill,

First off, welcome. I'm not sure what got into the municipal water supply, but there seems to be a breeding boom of sorts. Lots of newbies recently.

The truck only has one Pitman arm. The other side is the idler arm. I know, I know...details. Buy some from Auto Zone or Schuck's (formerly Checker). Those dummies warranty them forever, and you'll want to replace them yearly, just for fun. The idler arm especially, has a limited life span.

Next up, shocks. Let's not kid around. Get KYB Gas-A-Just. There's just no substitute. Buy them off EBay, it's the best price.

I already outlined the SeaFoam treatment for you in another post. It's dark out now...get to it. When you go to do emissions, make sure the engine is good and hot. It should pass. Really.

Need parts? Let these good dudes know. If we can't source it from the extensive collection of things just laying around, it's probably in a junkyard nearby. Plus, several of us have the ASA program on our computers to look things up, which gives a part number and a schematic.

We also have large hammers, just in case. Check back here frequently, as we have things-a-happening on a regular basis.

See you soon.

John B.

I just got back from taking it out for a ride. OK Johnny. I replaced the wheel bearing and belts. Belts are on tight. I am still hearing a screechy squeak coming from the driver side wheel. What the heck could it be? Its starting to drive me nuts.

Torn up inside front disc surface? Looks good on the outside, but somebody let the inner pad wear down and you can't see it until the wheel is off?

Like I know...c'mon...

Bad manual hub. That must be it.

Dead rabbit. Could happen.

Lower control arm bushing. There aren't any grease points on those. Drove me crazy on my first Raider.

Or a few dozen other things.

Is it brown with large tires? Saw one yesterday headed out on the 60. What part of town you live in? Great to have more Monteros to wheel with.

Nope. Mine is pretty much white. Its like a block of vanilla ice cream. Ice cream with howling breaks and bad emissions.
