I see people have mated the NP231 to the autos and the older manuals, does anyone have experience with the V5M31 tranny? I can't take the 1.9 reduction and would rather not get those expensive gears from Oz. I'll be doing a SAS in the near future, so I can take the case off and check it out then, I was just hoping to have some info before that.

Oh well, looks like I'll be breaking ground, at least in this forum. That seems surprising to me that no one with a 3.5L wants more transfer case options or did all 3.5Ls come with autos??

I can't speak for the Montero but in the US Mitsubishi dropped the manual transmission option completely on the Montero Sport in 2000. Prior to that ('97-'99) the only option for the 3.5L was an automatic. During the time they were making the Sport with the manual transmission they only sold a relative handful so they're vary rare in the US.
