Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
Hi all,
I need to replace the battery in my 90, and have question. Is running a deep cycle battery OK for day to day use, or should I get a standard battery?
Thanks, Greg B

In the heat where you are, I'd likely get a yellow top Optima. It'll stand up to alot of abuse and still be able to handle deep cycle-like discharges.
But, it really depends on what you're expecting from it. What's your typical usage like?
Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

a deep cycle isn't so good for running starters or winches. Great for things with constant draw like lights.

Deep cycle will survive many full discharge event. Std will not, but has much higher cranking amps. Deep cycle is for trolling motors on boats.

Yes, Standard Automotive type "Starting" batteries have high cranking amp capacity. True "Deep Cycle" batteries are made for long slow discharges and recharges. It will not hurt to use a deep discharge as a starting battery, it will however need to be physically larger to deliver a similar cranking amp capacity as a "Starting" battery. Typically Deep Cycle batteries are more expensive than starting batteries. More than you probably care to know can be found here: Wind Sun

Thanks for all the good info. I donÆt have any heavy electrical loads on my truck, so I guess I will get a standard battery. The deep cycle was only 6 bucks more, and I was looking to get the most bang for the buck. Seems like batteries only last about three years for me. Greg B

Greg, get something with a full 3-year replacement warranty for use here in Phoenix. You'll need it, as they never make it that long with the heat.

I've typically found good pricing on batteries of all types at Sams Club, however In September of last year I found Batteries Plus to have a killer deals on Optima batteries. I am not sure if this is still the case but I would check it out...
