Hi folks,
I've got a leak coming from wifes 97 Rav4 rear end. It's leaking from where the stub shaft enters the differential...looks to be a bad outside seal on the diff., at least thats what I think it is. I've got the axle removed and am trying to remove this stub shaft but it's not budging. Tried using pry bars behind it with no luck. Should I bolt the axle back on and use it as leverage to pop it out? ...any suggestions welcome.

Roll Me Over
dont quote me on this, BUT...

if it's like any other toyota IFS/IRS diff design, the way the stub axle is held into the diff is by a compression ring at the end of the axle, sitting in a groove.

you are right using a prybar.

but, you might wanna use 2 GIGANTIC prybars. like in the 9 and 3 o clock position and pop OUT the inner stub...

I stopped by my local dealership yesterday and asked a mechanic. Working on Rav's not his specialty but he asked me if there was a rear cover plate on the diff. (yes) that there is probably a clip holding the stub shaft in place. He never mentioned a possible compression ring on end of stub shaft.
If there is a internal clip holding it up I certainly don't want to get agressive with pry bars on the outside.
I guess I'll just remove the cover and take a look...no big deal,,,was hoping for a quick answer here.
thanks.

If you need anything from a factory service manual, Toyota offers them here for a nominal fee and I believe a 48 hour download window:

thanks, but won't need it. Shaft came out after removing internal clip, replaced the seal and made sure vent was free.
