The last nicotine I had (chew/smoke) was 15 months ago, and when my sister was up a week ago, I had half of a Light cigarette when we were drinking around a campfire. I was surprised when I didn't like it and have confirmed that I'm officially over cigarettes. Now, a good dip of Cope would probably do me in, so I won't try that. I quit cold turkey after 16 years of habit. One thing that helped me was Smokey Mountain Chew. It's herbal, non-addictive and has nothing harmful in it. I still use it, and it's ok. It's something to put in the lip that won't cause your teeth to fall out, anyway. Good luck, guys, and keep it up. It's definitely worth the trouble! EDIT: Here's a link: http://www.smokeysnuff.com/

My dad has resigned himself to smoking till he dies which annoys the piss out of me. My mom quit about 3+ years ago and now runs 5 miles a day and doesn't miss them at all. She also used that chantix or whatever, it works well but you gotta be ready to get some trippy dreams and some bad depression since it blocks alot of the pleasure receptors.

Thanks for that Jon. I should send some of that out to a friend of mine out in mining camp. He'd probably see it as a cruel joke and his coworkers in purgatory.
For a couple of friends, cigs were a tacticity (sp)thing; had to keep the hands busy. One friend decided she needed to clean up her act; quit smoking/drinking at the same time; plus had a full load of school + work. Said it was like having 3 dobermans on yer and nowhere to run. She carried around cinnamon sticks for about 2 years. Been clean now for about 10 years.
My other friend uses an e-cig; started working on quitting once they learned kid #1 was on the way. It's workin' for him.

I had some serious motivation this time. Named Aubrey, age 5.5mo, and Ethan, age -2mo, approx.
Been having baby crap stuck under my nose for months now, and Aubrey makes the baby models look like trolls. A seriously pretty little girl. Can't tell about Ethan yet, since all we've seen are the 3d ultrasounds, but I can tell you he's green colored and has a large hootus...

I think 4eP is right - its a frame of mind - wait till your really sick. That's when I came the close.
The FDA's behavior modification program didn't work for me when they banned 'flavored' cigs (funny how menthols didn't fall into the ban). Now I get mine for more than half the price I paid for them back when they weren't contraband. Maybe Soteoro's internet kill switch will save me from myself

Whenever I see a new doctor, I'm told I need to lose weight. I have to explain that I weighed 100 lbs. less when I smoked 2 packs a day. That usually shuts them up.

I realize this is diverging from the original question a bit, but the thread seems to have diverged as well, so I'll weigh in with my 2 cents on the subject of quitting. I was kind of an odd smoker; I absolutely love the flavor of a cigarette when I was in the right state of mind. (My preference at the time was Camels) Initially I never could stand the taste sober, but after a few beers a few cigs tasted great, and there are a few things that still trigger that taste sensation, dark chocolate, coffee, and sharp cheddar. Now keeping in mind that I drank and smoked just about every day the last few years of college, I wasnÆt a guaranteed so many a day or what not because I wanted the high, but for me it was the taste, so I might not be considered a ôtrue smokerö, but regardless I smoked many more cigs and cigars than I probably should have.
So one evening of partying, we had plenty of people who did smoke regularly, and they all went out with 2-3 packs each, and kept feeding me cigs all night long, we stopped partying when the sun came up, and figured I smoked on the order of a pack to a pack and a half when my norm was 3-5 cigs. I woke up later that day and felt winded walking to class, and thought, this is stupid, and I quit right there. It was really tough initially since the bars were all full of smoke, and it just seemed ôrightö, but I just kept thinking about that day walking to class, and it kept me on the right path. That was a little over 10 years ago, and I have had a couple drags since then, but each time it has just been a reminder of why I liked the flavor, then I think back to that morning and say yep, IÆm all set. I think the biggest thing that helped keep not smoking was when they switched bars and restaurants here about 6 years ago to non-smoking. Now I just have to laugh in the winter time when itÆs below freezing outside and people still have to get their fix to go with their drinks. I know itÆs different for everyone too, but when I quit mountain dew, and caffeine in college it was the same type of thing that got me through it, mind over matter, and telling myself I am not going to let an inanimate object get the best of me. I donÆt want to tell you to make yourself sick on the product and remember that feeling, but it worked for me.
Good Luck man!

I quit 18 months ago and let me tell you the habit was a 1000 times harder than the nicotine.
You need to have a mindset change towards the habit and preferably change it with something else.
I stopped when I moved home so it made it a little bit easier to not associate a location with the habit.
If the electric thingy isn't there you will grab for the real thing.
rather try to replace the habit with drinking water, chocolates, mints or whatever.
Good luck. It is tough. Good advice. Or you could just man-up and realize it is only substance and you are stronger than any inanimate objects. +1 Easiest way to quit I found is to stop buying the stuff. Next step, I changed EVERY habit i had...even down to what room I got dressed in, how I left for work, EVERYTHING. Been free of the stuff for almost 5 years now. Like Chris said, its just a damn plant. Seriously...stop buying it...the rest is easy.
