Its funny how one can live with things only so long... in my truck when using heat and a/c, I have low, next to low and then nothing in the fourth position (one away from high) and then high which moves a ton of air, but also a bit loud... is it possible that I have a bad switch, and is it a plug and play fix?

Sounds like the blower resistor. I believe Roger Brown (4crawler) has some info on this for the older trucks that may help point you in the right direction.

not to be a total dunce but the resistor would be the switch in the dash right? pepboys can get one in for about 50, and if it doesnt resolve the issue I can return it

It's held in place with 2 philips screws. You should be able to see the wire harness (goes to the blower and the resistor pack) if you look from the passenger seat floor.

First, there are lots of places that won't let you bring back electrical parts, so it's in your best interest to ask at the counter, not here.
The blower resistor if like on the older trucks is near your heater motor under the dash and glovebox.
2 small phillips screws and connector as mentioned. It'll either look like a bunch of small coils or a ceramic block when you remove it.

Went to pepboys, they got the new switch in, and I asked them, if it wasnt the switch was I stuck with it, and they said nope, you can give it back to us, So I dissected the dash, and popped out the old switch, looked in the back and one of the leads was totally burnt up. Put in the new switch and the 3rd fan speed is back and A-ok. good stuff. and having strong a/c was a really good thing this weekend in the northeast.
Also spending both days on the upper hudson didnt hurt too much either...
