Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a 1996 T100. My cruise used to work great. However, lately the cruise is operating "jerky". What I mean is that when the cruise is activated it surges when driving down the road. Feels like someone is driving and steadily pressing and releasing the gas. Very annoying. Also, since it's surging like that, it will downshift and then stay there and not upshift on the highway.

It's not the engine because the engine runs great otherwise. No problems and when I use the gas pedal it runs perfect.

I pulled the electric motor that runs cruise control. The brushes looked a little worn but still enough. I cleaned up the connections and reassembled it. Didn't seem to change anything.

So any ideas??

How good is yer transmission fluid? What's the current color/smell of it? Do you know what yer trans fluid temps are like? Have you thought about putting an auxiliary cooler on there?

How good are yer U-joints?

How clean is yer throttle body? How clean is yer IAC valve? How good are yer vacuum lines? How good is that air filter?

Any changes to yer truck? Added weight or bigger tire size?

How about your speedo cable? If the speedometer is jumpy, you can count on the cruise control to be herky-jerky.

All that is good. The engine, transmission, and drivetrain are perfect. Well maintained and working fine. It only does this when the cruise is on. You can feel the gas pedal pulsating when the cruise is on. When the cruise is off, if works fine.

I didn't think that the speedo cable had anything to do with the cruise. Thought that the cruise was all electronic while the speedometer in this truck was all mechanical and they both didn't interface. Am I wrong?

The speedometer cable was squeeking especially in cold weather. It's kind of gone away and the speedometer was working fine but if the cruise and the speedometer cable is connected then that could be it.

I should replace the cable anyway so where is a good place to get it?

Mine does the same thing. It only does it when the spedo is jumping a little. If it is jumpping, I dont bother to use cruise. When the spedo is smooth, cruise works fine.

Didn't you ask this question like 3 years ago? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Since you didn't provide enough information...I'm taking a guess. Looking up a 1996 T-100 SR5 4WD manual transmission on www.toyodiy.com I came up with this part number...83710-34070.

Looking up that part number on one of the online Toyota dealer parts catalogs...in this case it was www.toyotapartsales.com

OEM Catalog
Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
8371034070 $69.02 $0.00 $49.79

CABLE ASSY, SPEEDOME

and about $10 fer shipping...so about $60 shipped. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I did ask about the speedometer cable a long time ago. It quit squeeking so I quit thinking about it!! The cruise worked fine at the time.

Thanks for the links. I tried looking up the speedo cable on toyotapartsales.com but couldn't find it. So thanks for that.

My truck is an auto transmission.

I tried the cruise yesterday driving at about 40 mph and it worked fine. Seems to be the most erratic when driving above 55 mph.

The cruise control gets its speed info from the VSS, which is part of the speedometer, which is driven by the cable. So, the cable can definitely cause CC issues.
