Getting the Wheeling Fever
Info on the truck - 87 4runner SR5 22RE

the rear diff is grinding and I've been told by a mechanic that the entire thing needs replaced. It seems to me that I could just change the ring and pinion although it might be cheaper to just get the whole assembly used. First off, I am not sure what gear ratio the current differential is and second, I am looking for advice on what someone else would do in my shoes.

Thanks!

You can pull the third member and take it to a shop and have it rebuilt. It could also be one of the axle bearings is bad.

This will show you what you have to do to pull the axles or the third member. Scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Are you looking for teh cheapest option?
Your best bet is to find out what the ratio is, and assuming it's a factory one (4.10, 4.30, 4.56, 4.88) look up the part on car-part.com and just order one from a junkyard.
Don't be afraid to do a whole regional or even national search, there are yards that sell them for$200 and ship to you for another $30 or so.
The lin kabove shows how to get the 3rd off the truck, pretty easy. Biggest pain is (a) disconnecting teh brake lines and (b) breaking the seal between the case and axle housing so it'll come off.

With 200+ Billion electrical parts, the world most complicated machine is inside your own skull.

Question Reality.

Body Damage is Cool
I bought a V6 third from a guy in VA. It shipped real nice in a plastic 5 gal bucket with lid. I think UPS wanted around $65 to ship it to Wisconsin. -- Matt
