Getting the Wheeling Fever
I just got the Raider back from the mechanic with all the bugs out of the engin/transmission replacement and had the steering box and shaft go out on me. The guy at Goodyear said the steering wheel is barely hanging on and the nut won't tighten. Does anyone know where I can find replacement parts for the truck? I am almost $10K into this restoration and I need a break!

the steering box is broken? or the pitman arm? Pitman arms are pretty easy to replace. Entire steering boxes I have done in about an hour.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I was told that the steering box need replacing and the steering shaft/spindle/column needed to be replaced also because the threads would not hold the nut for the steering wheel. He said someone could possibly retap it and save replacing it. I have found a couple of rebuilt Steering boxes for around $300. I haven't located a shaft. Would this be something a relative novis could replace? I have the manual... Not all the tools in the world.

Replacing a steering box is child's play, 2 metal lines 14mm and 17mm, 12mm keeper bolt from steering wheel shaft to box, 4 14mm bolts holding the box to frame and I believe its a 19mm castle nut holding the pitman arm to the steering linkage. Also, $300 for a steering box is ridiculous. I paid $50 for the one from a 95SR for my 89. For a bolt on replacement (and easier shopping) all Gen1 boxes are interchangeable. If you replace the pitman arm the pitman shaft nut is a 32mm?

I still think he is refering to the pitman arm and not the shaft. Those threads on the shaft are pretty sturdy.

I'm parting out my 1987 Raider, and all the steering components are good. Figure out what you need and email me - we'll work out a deal you'll be happy with: terrylmanuel@gmail.com

Do you have pics yet of this 10K resto? We've been waiting for a while. C'mon, share.

I think he's saying that really all he needs is the shaft. The nut that holds the steering wheel on has stripped out. I bet you could retap the threaded portion of the shaft pretty easy and just use the next smaller size nut...

If it really is just that nut, couldn't he just drill the threads out and run a longer nut and put a bolt on it? no worries about threads to strip out then.

I have the steering column and parts out of another Montero, but I'm second in the parts offering line.
