Getting the Wheeling Fever
Ok, need some help here, 89 3.0 LS. Fuel pump was shot, pulled unit, had to rebuild the whole intake unit, tubes rusted out etc. Cleaned the tank, (real mess) got new pump, filters, welded up the new tubes, bolted all back together, go to fuel pump check port on right side passenger kick panel, give it 12 volts and voila, pump working fine. HOWEVER, can't seem to get 12 volts to the pump from the ignition circuit, i.e. turn the key, no pump. I've been thru the full shop manual, the electrical manual, and the Haynes manual..no where can i find a reference to a fuse, fusible link, or relay that turns that #&^&%$ pump on LOL.

If I sound frustrated, I am LOL. Anyone have any ideas why the pump isn't getting power? Rest of ignition works sweet, squirt some gas in the intake and it will fire like raging bull (and it should with all the other work I've done on it). Any and all suggestions welcomed. Running out of time to fix this up for my niece to take to college.

As always, thanks in advance.

Year of the rig & engine would be nice to know... also many of the factory service manuals are available for download if you don't have them.

see mitu bishi links dot com. (yeah... join all 5 of the last words together and turn the dot into a . and you'll find the manuals <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cyclops.gif" alt="" />

Check the main fuses in the green box at the battery and the fusible links in the black box beside it. Power goes from battery+ to the fuse, to a fusible link, to the key switch, to the MPI control relay mounted in the front passenger kick space and on to the pump. The MPI control relay is triggered by the ECU.

We have a WINNER!!! smile Thanks Frank. It was the mpi relay as you suggested. Problem wasn't the relay however, as usual, it was corrosion on the connection. Pulled em, cleaned em, shot em with dielectric, plugged in and we got power to the pump.

Crossed our fingers and hit the key, engine turned over almost twice then fired and settled to a nice easy idle. Looks like I scored on this one smile 126k, no smoke, no driveline crunching or clunking, good power, lifter clicked for a few seconds till i blipped the throttle then it sent silent, probably needed to pump up after god knows how long sitting. Sunroof even worked smile nough for today, going to take to the local lift tomorrow, swap out the fluids with some interval oil, run some cleaner thru the radiator after checking all the hoses and belts, both look like they were replaced tho just before she began her long sit.

In any event, nother one brought back to life smile

thanks frank
