OK, so I got a used ECM from a guy on here and it worked great for about 4 months, now it died just like my first one, bad capacitors (Not the sellers fault, he was great and no way he could have known).
Same problem as well, just all of a sudden it wont start, spark or pop at all. Was runing fine when I drove it to a store, then when I came out, nothing.
So I was going to send in the old ECU to AVPRO, but found one for $261 at the local parts place. Cardone part number 72-6155. I have tried two of them from the parts store and both will start the vehicle, but it pops and surges real bad, almost as if the fuel is trimmed down then turned back on. So is this the wrong part or what? Also the case looks completely different, do these people who "reman" these ecu's actually know anything or is it just a generic ECU that they never really have installed on a Montero to see if it works, its just in "spec".?
Thanks Randy

I'd check the coil, power transistor and distributor before condemning the ECU.

Frank,
I've been on this forum long enough to know and value your opinion and expertise. When the old ecu is dead as a doornail and it has a leaking Cap and it's also a known issue with the 90 and 91 an a new ecu of unknown quantity, do you really think I should dig that deep?
Do you have any experience with the Cardone ECU? I'm a bit leary of an ECU that has been reman by someone who does not specialize in Mitsubishis. They don't even have any mitsu numbers on the ecu. Just a touch scary.
Thanks Randy

I don't know anything about any of the ECU rebuilders, but I would not buy one that was not in an original case. I would also want it to have the original number on it - like 6477 or whatever is appropriate.
You can read any stored codes with an analog ohmmeter and there is a flatline code for a bad ECU. I would at least want to do that before saying the ECU is dead.
Since some of the other ECUs almost made it run, the problem could be with the replacement ECUs, or with the components I mentioned that work with the ECU to create spark at the proper time - and it's not very difficult to perform basic tests with a multi-meter on a coil, a power transistor, an IAC stepper motor or a distributor. What if one of those components is bad and fried the ECU? At worst you'll fry the new one - but best case is you might not need a new ECU, or you might save the cost of buying more than one replacement.

The reman calipers I bought from Cardone had the wrong pins. Even the replacements had the wrong pins so it seemed the parts bagger was taking them from the wrong bin. I emailed Cardone and got prompt response and good service with proper pins mailed out. They toute their ISO/TS certifications and I think if you contacted them they may be able to help you as they seemed eager to do the right thing.

Frank ECU shows no codes, the needle wont even move, its dead. Opened and has a cap that bursted, and boy does that thing stink, so 99% sure its a ECU problem.

That's definately a sign of a bad ECU. You can replace the capacitors if you're handy with a soldering iron and printed circuits. Somewhere on the web there's an article on how-to for Mitsubishi products. I would still check some of the basic stuff - IAC, TPS, coil and power transistor while you're waiting for whatever ECU solution you decide is appropriate. Frank

Immediately remove that capacitor and any residual fluid from the board. The fluid is corrosive (an acid) & will eat the solder runs & circuit board if you don't. I'd do this immediately if I were you.

Well if anyone cares about the outcome, here it is.
Bought a ECM off ebay for for $90 Shipped. Plugged it in and she runs like new.
ZCleaned the old one up to keep it from corroding, going to send it off to get rebuilt and then install it, and keep the stock one for an emergency...
Alls well that ends well...Thanks to everyone for their input.
