3.5L DOHC - Blue Smoke on acceleration :( #1004891 08/01/10 02:00 AM

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a 1995 Montero SR 3.5L DOHC 139k miles. It has blue smoke when accelerating from idle. It's a puff of smoke then goes away.

On my 1992 Montero 3.0L the culprit was the valve stem seals. I replaced them and no more smoke. I also replaced them on a 1990 Montero and it fixed the blue smoke problem.

I'm not excited about replacing 24 valve stems. That's going to be a tedious project. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />

Are the valve stem seals the likely issue? Or is there something else I should check for?

Does anyone have experience replacing the valve stem seals on the 3.5L?

IIRC, somebody on this forum was able to do the 3.5 DOHC valve stem seals without removing the heads, but when I did mine several years ago I tried 3 different valve spring compressors with no luck (really limited space around the valve springs on these heads) before I finally ended up pulling the heads off to replace them. I did everything on my motor at the same time - timing belt, valve stem seals, lower intake manifold, plugs, wires, belts, hoses, radiator rodded, even had a valve job done since the heads were off and getting disassembled anyway.

95 Montero SR
3.8 MIVEC, Advance headers, 2 1/2" exhaust, Magnaflow muffler, OME shocks & rear springs, 2" body lift, 3" tank lift, 4.90s, TRE front locker, factory rear locker, Roger Brown Rock Sliderz, 315/75r16 (35") tires, Sport big brakes

That's a major job. Do you remember the head rebuild cost? Did you do it yourself?

Do you have any information on the tool you rented? Did you use the air compressor trick to hold the valves up? Would you go this route vs pulling the heads?

i did not rent the tool i bought the tool then i had to make an adapter for the mitsubishi springs cause they are so small and now i rent the tool out it comes with the fittings for the compressed air hose it has all you need except for the cuss words to remove and replace the valve springs without removing the heads
