Has anyone tried using a performance chip in their Monty? I think I've talked to a few folks who have "tuners" in their rigs, but I was wondering if people have found a "chip" that actually improves performance. I'm very happy with my low end torque, however, some manufactures claim their chips helps with MPG and top end. Has anyone tried one of these "plug and play chips"?

There are no chips for the V6 computer. You can use a piggyback tuner though. There is one company working with a prom replacement but this is not an ECU that can be socketed like some of the 4 cylinders.

Thanks for the info. There are a few companies out there that are selling chips for Gen III rigs, I was wondering if anyone has actually tried them and what their results have been.

There are no "chips" for our Gen3 rigs, just some piggy-back tuners if you can find them. Some gents in Australia are starting to "flash" the ECU with a new program, but I think we are pretty much screwed here in the US.
There's just not enough following here and the Pajero/Montero hasn't been sold here officially in 5 years...not like there was any aftermarket then either.

Has anyone had good luck with a piggy back tuner on a Gen 3?

You can reprogram the 98 and newer ECU. There is no need for piggybacks or chips.

What's the best way to reprogram it to squeeze out a little more power?

Each engine must be tuned first on the dyno for max power pulls, then interpolated on the road with a wide band oxygen sensor. It can be done with an integrating accelerometer like a gtech pro, but this requires repeated runs on probably public roads. level one mile ones is nice...
In short, there's no way to give you a short answer. Sorry. Tuning equals time and instruments and some way to change the eprom chip memory to modify the fuel maps and fuel trims.
A good short, sort of, tutorial on all you ever wanted to know about tuning efi is on sdsefi.com in the tech section - see menu at bottom of home page. good stuff.

I'm working on reverse engineering the rom from a 1990 Mighty Max V6 ecu, not sure if the motero ecu's are eprom or not like this one was.
So far it shares quite a bit with a DSM rom, fuel tables, etc all seem to be present, there's a redline someplace in there, etc.
I don't have a running V6 so I can't test anything out, but it seems easily tuneable.

Before going into moding your ECU you should look into 4.90?s if you already have them think about getting some 3.15?s from Marks4wd. Lots more power there.
