The battery light usually indicates a bad charging system. My guess is that you are correct, and that your alternator is going bad (or is bad already). You can have Autozone or similar shops check it for free usually.

My charging system isn't charging the battery. All voltage indicators (Scangauge II, cig socket reader) are reading 12V which tells me the battery isn't gitting the voltage. Cables and connectors are good and clean. Battery is topped up. I figured my charging light would indicate that there's a problem...but no it's failing at it's job. The bulb is good as I can see the indicator before I start the engine.

Just pulled the alternator off and checked the brushes. All worn down.

Gonna see if the local Toyota dealerships have the parts. Lucky me that there's an alternator place near me...A-Alternator & Starter Rebuilders, 900 Grand Ave, Bacliff, TX 77518, 281-339-9099!!

No go on both places. Had the alternator tested at AutoZone. It failed.

Got another one from the local parts yard fer $50. At least I have something working fer now. I still find it strange that it didn't register the lack of charging. I wonder if the internal voltage regulator gave up the ghost and in that process it can't report back to the system that it's not charging?

I would imagine if all the diodes fried in the IC that would be the case.

If you go to the tech articles at autoshop101 for charging systems, about page 6, there's a good schematic of the IC for the alternator.
