Need a Spot
I perused the archives but could not find out what might be causing my problem.

Truck: 88 Montero, SWB 2.6L I4 144K miles and all stock and just about everything works including power windows.

Problem: When I first start driving from a cold start there are no issues. After it warms up or after a few miles when I get on pavement and from a stop... when I go forward with the wheels turned in either direction there is a very obvious shudder towards what feels like the rear of the truck. The sticker says it does have a LSD. Not sure if that matters. If I start from a stop with the wheels straight I do not experience the shudder. Truck has auto locking hubs and is set in 2wd.

any ideas? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />

Yup, that's the lsd clutches grabbing because you don't have the lsd friction modifier in the gear lube. It reduces the friction and lets the clutches slip in normal driving. It's worse in the swb because the short wheelbase makes the torque differences greater side to side.

Thanks.... sounds like there is a consensus... I'll change the gear oil.... but could someone tell me where to get the posi additive... do I ask for posi additive or LSD additive? Can you get this from like Auto Zone? pardon my ignorance...

Yes, that's where I get the additive that I use.

The book says every 30k, unless you go wading a lot, and axle deep.

I don't know what the recommended interval is, but I just change mine once every year or two. 30,000 miles is probably about as long as you want to go between changes, but since the level should be checked periodically, it's not much more difficult to go ahead and change it while you're checking.

Be sure to remove the fill plug first. You want to be sure you can refill the diff before you remove the drain plug. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Frank,

Thanks for all your info on the SWA post as well. Concerning the posi-additive, I just went to Autozone and bought some, but the guy warned that it could ruin my LSD. The brand is Trans-X Posi-Trac and it says its for GM #1052358, Ford #M2C118-A, Chrysler #4318060 and "most imports". Should I worry about putting this stuff in? Is this the same stuff that Mitsu uses?

Thanks!
