This is the same Montero im working on for my daughter...the sunroof doesnt work...leaks bad, and she could care less if she has it...now Ive read that the leaking is probably caused by the runoff channels being clogged..but also the weather stripping around the glass is completely rotted away. since its unusable, can I put some good silicone around it? will that seal off any more leaking?? I have a 90 available at a salvage yard in almost mint condition im pulling off of, but it has no sunroof so im thinking if I seal it off, Ill take the headliner from the salvage one and just cover it up...any thoughts??

I dunno about what a kid thinks about the sunroof. How much to fix it proper? I wish I had a sunroof <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />. Sure would be nice down here in Florida.

You can seal it with silicone like the previous owner did to my 89LS. Problem is that because of dirt, heat, etc, even that doesnt last long.
To do the repair properly, the headliner needs to be dropped, the sunroof assembly removed, cleaned and new seals put on. I bought new seals for mine about 2 years ago (approx. $120 for both IIRC), but still havent gotten around to installing since she's still on jackstands on another long term project.
I'm a big proponent of doing it right the first time. However I do realize that time and budget are not always on our side with these rigs. Just realize if you do use silicone it wont last long. Esp. in FL. I'd be suprised if it last 1 season.
For MudRaider: If your serious about wanting a sunroof, I did save the whole assembly from another 89LS I parted out a few years ago. I cant imagine the pains you'd go through to mod a non-sunroof rig to accept a factory unit. It's not as easy as cutting a hole! You'd need a motor yet too (I sold the one from the parted 89), but I have a control head for it. You'd also need new weatherstripping for it.
Best of luck, Jim

I was just in ASA and thought I'd check on this.
Prices are MSRP/core/Retail from parts.com (dealer network in Texas).
The inner spongey seal is now sold as 2pcs:
Part Number: MB507668 List Price Core Price Your Price Roof - Sunroof - Housing - Seal Rear 1989 - 1991 $13.04 $0.00 $7.82
Part Number: MB507667 List Price Core Price Your Price Roof - Sunroof - Housing - Seal Front 1989 - 1991 $16.45 $0.00 $11.35
when you get these, you'd swear you could have gotten them at your local hardware store - and you probably can!
The main outer weatherstrip was sold previously as:
Part Number: MB507678 List Price Core Price Your Price Roof - Sunroof - Weatherstrip Weatherstrip 1989 - 1991 $163.40 $0.00 $112.75
but in ASA shows it was replaced with:
Part Number: MR100655 List Price Core Price Your Price Roof - Sunroof - Weatherstrip - From 3/92 From 3/92 1992 - 2000 $149.73 $0.00 $103.32
so still all-in-all, not bad. Roughly $130 incl. shipping for new seals all around.
And BTW, for a sunroof motor:
Part Number: MB591815 List Price Core Price Your Price Electrical - Body electrical - Sunroof - Motor Motor, montero 1991 - 1994 $558.28 $0.00 $385.22
If you do elect to go with new seals, you can take a week to get it pulled apart while you wait for part delivery and btw - I highly recommend at least 2 people when dropping that sunroof assembly. It is HEAVY and awkward trying to manuever it out the rear door.
Good luck with the project! Jim

For John: i just may need that motor, looks like im gonna tear this whole thing out and go thru it, I will definitely let you know.
For Mudraider: Im in FL also, bout 3 hours south of you..my daughter could care less about the sunroof cause she says she wont use it...being that the AC in this thing is shot and im sure it will be WAY to much for me to fix...I think shell change her mind in our 100 plus days...L
For MI-Mitsu: I agree on the silicone, I was thinking the flexing alone from driving would mess it up, as far as the parts..you are way better than me, I searched and could find nothing for that year, is parts.com reputable?? and since youve torn these out, there is a metal piece in the front of the glass, possibly all the way around, that is rusted beyond repair..what is that??
thanks all for all the answers and help!

1st, ASA I find is a bit fickle. For example I need the OE metal mount flanges for the rear mudflaps. They're the same 89-91 .. probably even earlier as well. But for 91 - ASA says no information available. When i plug in my VIN for my 89LS, I get part numbers. Sometimes you have to "coax" the information out of the damn thing. But it beats having nothing! 2nd, re: parts.com Yes they're reliable. Mostly. Like any other dealer however, they in turn need to order the parts from Mitsu's warehosue (in NJ IIRC), bring it in to they're place in TX, then ship it to you. Reasonable shipping prices, and cheaper than most of the other Mitsu dealer sites I've seen recommended here. Near impossible getting anyone live on the phone. Most contact - if necessary - is done through the sites messaging system. What it boils down to is if you have time to wait, the price is defintiely right. I also had issue with their packaging - or lack thereof - on one particualr order. They replaced the item, but again... a delay. and since youve torn these out, there is a metal piece in the front of the glass, possibly all the way around, that is rusted beyond repair..what is that??
???? not real sure. I think you'll need to snap a pic and post it. There's the metal frame itself - really beefy. There's also what looks like metal tubes running around the front and to the sides - these hold the cable/track that the motor runs to open and close the glass. If these are rusted through... you're SOL and may need to get a whole new sunroof unit. I can't imagine there being a way to trying to repair these things short of getting large brake/fuel tbing, bending, re-brazing them on the unit again then re-running the cables through. My spare is still stored over at my relatives house (i ran out of room), I'll see if I can get pics of it this weekend just in case. This would need to come to you on a pallet however - or you can always try uship.com or CL There are always people travelling back and forth between MI & FL for vacation, college or retirees. Piggybacking on one of these trips is always a possibility. Best to post a pic of your rust issue and let us all have a look. Jim

Ok here are the pics, sorry for the resolution but I had to take them with my cell.....the rusted metal is hard to see, but it is right below the glass as you can see in this picture: the next two show some copper? pipes coming off the metal assembly..there is rust on these also, I think these are the drive tubes?? how exactly does this glass move?? also in the second picture, to the right of the rusted metal clip? and above the black metal piece is where the metal below the glass is rusted..just another shot of it from a different angle.. sorry, but for some reason the last picture uploaded wrong..I could not get it to stay rotated, even though its right in photobucket...so much to learn...L..and thanks for all the help!
