Ok as the title says I need some help locating a squeak in the front end of my NG SWB Pajero 2.5TDi.

Dont worry I am going to give you more info than that.

I took the truck to the mechanic to get a few bits and pieces done, one being the front wheel bearings because I had this squeak from what I think is the front driver side. I figured may as well do the passanger side while I am at it, so we did.

While they were doing the wheel bearings we found that one of the discs had gone metal to metal before I had purchased the vehicle. So replaced both front rotors and pads as they were close to minimum thickness anyway.

When installing the new pads the left side pistons would not go all the way back and would have been dragging. Both front calipers were sent away for overhaul. New pistons in the left hand side and new seals all round.

Other work completed at the same time was:

- new water pump
- new thermostat
- new valve cover gasket and half moon seal

Driving home I notice the squeak still exists. The squeak is road speed dependant i.e. it gets faster the faster the truck goes. Only hear it while over approx 35/40km/h

Pushing the clutch in doesnt make the squeak go away. Pushing the brake does not alter the sqeak in any way.

So with the work that has been done and not rectifying the squeak can anyone guide me in another direction other than dragging brakes or wheel bearings.

Maybe the speedometer cable..... maybe the dust cover on the t-case tailshaft. A long shot, but check the clearance between the rotors and dust covers.

You know I had actually been thinking the speedo cable. Because when I stuck my head right forward to hear the sound today on the way home it sounded loud and like it was coming from the fire wall.

Perhapse I will disconnect it and see what the outcome is.

Wow I would be cheesed off if it was as simple as that. LOL

I would still have a good laugh though.

How do you lube the speedo cable?

I've never tried to salvage one.

Get 2 or 3 passengers in there and ask them what direction the squeak is coming from - kids are good for this as they like crawling around to get closer to the noise. Often times I can't accurately tell the direction a noise is coming from myself from the driver's seat...

I used to just take off the back cover of the gauge cluster. You can then pull out the cable out from the back of the speedo. Spray some white lithium grease or similar down there. Always worked for me, at least for a few months.

I always use powdered graphite for VW's. Liquid lubrication of any kind never seems to last.

Well I disconnected the speedo from the trans and went for a drive. Dead silence....no squeaks.

At least it is something small though and I will try some lube on the cable first before replacing.

Glad I paid $200 to have my wheel bearings replaced when they were not required *sarcasm* but blessing in disguise that I found a few other issues and got them sorted before they caused other issues.

I used some chain lube that I would normally use on my downhill mountain bike. Put some down the gauge end of speedo cable and worked it in by moving th cable back and forth. Hooked it all back up and took it for a spin.

Dead silence..... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/mrt.gif" alt="" /> I pitty the fool.

Speedometer cables are notorious for making fools of folks.
