Awhile ago diff fluid starts running down passenger tire, month later, passenger side axle shaft slides out while driving. I replaced entire rear end with one from parts rig, noticed the next day it leaked oil on both tires.
Now about a week later i feel this axle is about to come apart, I think the passenger side has already started to slide out about a 1/4". Feel like its gonna pop off next time I drive.
What holds the axle shafts in and how is the oil sealed? What do I need to do to fix this? I have the manual but have never worked on a rear end.
Thanks

IIRC, clips at the diff are what hold the axles in.
An Inner and Outer seal keeps the fluids at bay. I suspect your clips are no longer attached and your seals are toast.
Easy fix from what I've read but you need a press to install the seals properly (according to the manual) but I'm sure others may have an easier way of doing them properly. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

do you have a part number for the clips? Has anyone else had this problem? My rig has 250kmiles so I wasn't too surprised but the parts rig only has 170k.
Thanks

Nope but they may be shown in the parts no. repository noted in the FAQ thread. Additionally you may need to use the Mitsu CAPS program to get the part number. You'll also need your vin to do that. If you're not sure what CAPS is, again, check the FAQ thread.

I don't think so, even if one was completely disconnected I don't see how it would cause this. Only thing I can think of is maybe more oil than I thought was leaking out and maybe something burned up from lack of oil.
Also can anyone confirm how the axle shafts are held it/ what I need to do to fix it? I looked at the diagram in the manual but can't really tell what exactly holds it all together.

My 89 does not have clips in the diff. When I take the bolts out at the ends of the axle they slide out of the diff.

so then what exactly holds everything together? Do I need to buy a new bearing and seal and have it pressed on?

Alright well I dug my last axle out of the scrap pile and took the good side apart, also checked the diagram in the manual again.
There is a nut on the inboard side of the bearing. I'm thinking it must have just backed off. That seems to be the only thing holding the axle assembly together.
Tomorrow I'll take mine apart and see if either one is loose.
