 5th gear is making noises

Interested in an 87 4runner. I haven't seen it yet. It's got about 320,000 on it, but the body is in good shape. The owner says that there's a rattling noise when in fifth gear going down the highway. And to add to that, I think he said the shifter shakes in fifth also.
Sounds like it needs a rebuild. I assume it's the w56. If I take the time to go see it and maybe get it, should I assume the tranny is on its last legs? He says it works fine otherwise.

Another question is what models/years could I swap trannys out of? I'm sure there's s swap guide around here, but I must be blind to not have found it yet.
