Need a Spot
Hi Guys,
This is my first post here, but I have gleaned quite a bit from browsing so many posts!
I have a '92 lwb RS with 208,000 mi... It has developed some shaft play in the steering that my cursory and "shallow" disassembly haven't been able to figure out yet. I'm not talking about Freeplay in the turning, but actual x-y axis movement. With the steering wheel off, the movement doesn't seem too bad, but once the 'wheel is back on, the increased diameter makes it quite evident. There wasn't any big circumstance that made me notice, just one day it was fine, and the next it would wiggle. I'm not familiar with the steering column assembly, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome Thomas.

Have you tried downloading the factory service manuals and checking out the steering assembly for areas that could loosen up and lead to this? Check the FAQ thread at the top of this forum for the link to the download.

Body Damage is Cool
It doesn't sound like a problem that I've ever heard about anyone experiencing before, so you're probably not going to get much help from anyone who's dealt with it previously. I'd download the FSM and get familiar with how the steering column goes together, then start poking around to see what you can find. My first guess would be that the column attaching bolts have worked themselves loose somehow, but you may have a loose bearing or something like that.

hi
I have been there many times befor, I don't know if it was the way I steer my car or perhaps the way I hold the wheel when I drive, but it have happened to me 3 times now!!!!!!

and the gulty part is the Steering Column Bushing-Bearing, it is a cheap part but vary labour consuming; you have to remove the steering column and replace this Bush-Bearing

some how this bearing or bushing just comes lose of it place from underneath the column and the wiggle starts, and as you said one day the car was fine, the next day there was the wiggle and it was very scary to me the first time i faced this problem, i thought the wheel would come of while i am driving
