is that an issue with these engines? i was talking to a well known 'starquest' engine builder and he said to be weary about it once he heard my monty was at 170k. i wasn't even aware the montero had balance shafts, honestly, haha.
'87 swb 5spd 2.6L Montero, >150k miles. Pretty much bone stock as purchased from user ToddStidham1, 'cept some Hella 500's, 700's and Hella ECE headlight conversions.

along with clean oil, dont let it run low. Also, the chain that runs the shafts has an adjuster. If it gets too loose it slaps and sounds a bit like a rod knock.
Eventually this knocking causes the chain guide pivot bolt to break. That stops the oil pump... and creates a hole in your wallet.
At 170,000 you may want to consider new chains and guides for the timing chain and the ballance shafts.

It's like 11 bucks to delete them. The bearings on the balance shaft seem to wear more.I never run them anymore and never have issues with vibration. But at least make sure the guides and chain have been replaced lately.

that's one opinion. I have another. Driving a non BS motor is like living in a threshing machine with the farmer caught inside the blades. It buzzez like a cicada. I had the ps pump bracket bread from vibration fatigue 3 times, and the pot metal a/c comp bracket went into about 10 pieces. I had read errors on the cd player. The balance shafts spin at twice engine speed, but the bearings live just fine with plenty of oil and pressure.
Ditto Kevin on the chain...
