Body Damage is Cool
A guy at work recently picked up a freebie Nissan hardbody pickup chassis, and was telling me his plans for a wheeler. He was telling me about these Perkins motors that are used in all the berry pickers in our area and can picked up for near nothing. Says swaps are pretty straightforward. I did a little poking online, but wondered if you guys had any info.

ya, if I can't do something serious about fuel economy, the monty will have to go.

Time to share some beer and brats with one of those berry pickers who might have one of those mills installed already.

Take pix!

Very heavy and relatively underpowered

520kg for 130kw (175 HP) and these things can only max out to 2800 rpm. Bags of torque though but also very large in size.

They are designed for long life, low maintenance, constant RPM tasks.

All in all not a good candidate. Info gained from their website so the engines you are talking about are the less hi tech versions of those (ie heavier/less power/larger)

you're close enough to canada right? find a guy with a cheap enough pajero diesel and swap the goodies since we aren't allowed to have the actual trucks here. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

True enough; we have lots of Paj guys here, many directly north of you.

Yeah those engines will be too underpowered for the montero, they are likely designed to run all day at 2 different RPM ranges one for idle and one for working. If these berry pickers drive themselves (not a tow behind deal) still would probably need a different cam and injection pump to make it streetable. Your best bet is finding a Pajero engine if you want fuel economy, otherwise you'll be looking at probably a loss.

And then bigger springs or torsion bars...

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...
