Getting the Wheeling Fever
Everything I have read makes sense. Only question is since my choke isnt hooked up do I still need to let the engine warm before makin any adjustments? And what if my timing is already advanced? How go I tell? I would do backflips if I got twenty mpg or even anywhere close!

I don't want to be all doom and gloom, but how was the truck running before you installed the Weber? You could still have issues with timing, spark plugs, plug wires, carb choke, etc. Best to try and start eliminating things one at a time. I got the 32/36 because I don't have any plans on modifying the engine, so the smaller carb is the 95 percent solution for most of my driving.

As for the carb, I would try and hook the choke back up. My 32/36 has an eletric choke, and to be honest, I don't know if it really works or not, which I guess is a good thing. But the engine should be at operating temperature before you go and adjust the fuel/air and idle set screws.

Not sure how to check the timing, but if your Monty has the old-school style distributor with timing marks on the front of the engine, that should be easy to check. You'll need an inductive timing light (the kind that clips to one of the sparkplug wires), and figure out what the timing is supposed to be set at (should be an identification label of some kind in the engine compartment, or under the hood).

Use the search function, and ask questions. The folks in here, for the most part, are patient and will try and help you out.

Social, im almost positive I have a timing issue. How do you post a pic on this site? It looks to me that the timing is already advanced. Someone else installed the carb, like I said before im not a carb person. Im almost certain im gonna have to take the truck to someone who knows about this. My idle screw isnt even touching the piece that it rests on. I turned the mixture screw down until it ran rough and opened it back untill it smoothed out. Still idleing high. On my distributor I have a mark where it piviots. To me it looks way low ( down towards the front of the truck ) that would idle it high rite? Thats prolly why my idle screw isnt touching the stop and still running high, rite?

Forgot to mention, I already added a stiffer returnspring when u let off the gas it goes all the way back. Also checked the linkage. Everything seems ok, I have slack in the linkage but not alot. Just a bit more than It needs! Im leaning on this being a combination of problems lol.

Your main idle screw may not be touching because your carb is on fast idle.

Fast idle is used during warm up. If it sticks or the vehicle is cold the regular idle screw wont touch.

You need a timing light to set the timing. You cant go by the mark on the dist housing.

I am running the stock carb and getting about 13 mpg so dont feel too bad. I have a 32/36 waiting to be installed if my friend ever gets to it. I could put it on but who knows about the vacuum hoses. I got it used so no manual. I would be happy with 15 mpg and more power. My dad borrowed it last weak and informed me his mower had more power...lol
