Ever since I've owned my Monty, the front drive shaft (between front axle and transfer case) rubs metal on metal against case, destroying oil seals religiously. I plan to shorten it by 1" by a local machinist so it's balanced.

Has anybody every had this issue? Any suggestions? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

This is not a common problem. Any chance it had the wrong shaft installed, as in too long? Or and damage history that would have moved the diff back?

I've never heard of such...

Any possibility of looking under a known "good" unit to see how yours stacks up in comparison? Sounds almost like the frame could be out of square.

87 Montero, bought new, by me -

I have not put the two pieces side by side for the 4-cyl, but I think auto and stick driveshafts have different lengths. Measure yours and let me know the length. I have some stick shafts that could be sent to you for the shipping price.

I'm pretty sure the Auto and Stick drive shafts for the 4 Cyl are different lengths. Plus the 6 cyl vs. the 4 cyl are different too. I also have a spare shaft from a 4 cyl 5 speed. If Rx's are not the correct length, send me a PM. Same deal - u pay shipping and its yours.

Maybe somebody swapped in a V6 front differential and did not swap the drive shaft. The 4 cyl manual shaft is 1" longer than the V6 manual, so after the differential swap the shorter drive shaft is required.

Here is my LSD / differential swap post explaining it.

After purchasing the Monty, the only thing I've done to the front axle is swap out the guts with an V6 LSD axle and re-installed it...

And I'll measure my mess and re-post tonight... Thanks a lot you guys!

I think you will need a V6 manual transmission drive shaft. The 1" extra length of the 4 cylinder shaft would explain why your seals are getting hammered.
