Need a Spot
Oh and thank you everyone for the input. Seems like I'll keep my eyes out for a whole auto donor. Thanks again.

Other things to consider.

If you can get the 1990 1/2 lockup auto you will get better highway performance.

The roll stopper bracket is in a different location on frame between the auto and the manual.

On my swap I had to add a bracket to bolt the back of the cross member to.

Make sure you get all the drive plates and pilot adaptors from the back of the the V6 you pull the tranny from.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I just got my 89 and got an 87 parts car with an auto. So, 6 hours labor could swap my 5 speed to the auto? The Auto trans is already out of the 87 sitting in the back.

The guy I bought it from was going to do it as part of the deal, but he was a lose screw and really didn't want him messing with it. He was saying the rear end had to be changed as well, is this correct? All parts were going to be from the 87.

And if changed, what mileage should be expected? I drove the 89 300 miles on the interstate at 60, mostly 65 and got just over 21 MPG! I thought that was very good for a 4x4 of its age.

If your 89 is a V6 I would not reccomend using a 4cyl automatic transmission, being that you have to swap bellhousings. That, and my Montero had a 4cyl trans swapped into it and it overheated constantly and eventually burnt the pump up. And if your getting 21mpg I wouldn't dare exchange that transmission since its obviously dipped in gold and lined with diamonds (my modded v6 auto Raider gets 13mpg). <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
