Getting the Wheeling Fever
Someone in my ski house got a new 4runner - after taking a peek inside I closed the door and thought "Wow - that sounds heavy!" Looked at the VIN tag on my 2002 and it weighs a svelte 5250 - the new comes in at a whopping 6300!!

Yeah, it'll probably kill the mileage too. The older RAVs get better gas mileage than the newer ones for that very reason- weight.
We know 3 people that bought newer RAVs after their first ones and all have the same gripe about the mileage.

5250 pounds for a 2002 would be the max gross vehicle weight rating, not what it actually weighs. It probably weighs something between 3800-4100. The curb weight of the 2011 4Runner is listed as 4400. So yeah, they are getting heavier, but you're looking at the numbers for the GVWR's.

What Jeff said- GVWR is max curb weight with MAX cargo- fully loaded.

They're getting heavier primarily because they're getting bigger and bigger.
